Introduction To ISEE Lower Level

The following article provides an outline for ISEE Lower Level. ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) is an entrance exam for admission into private schools in the USA. It is handled by ERB (Educational Records Bureau). It consists of 4 levels i.e., Primary, Lower, Middle, and Higher levels. The lower-level exam is taken by the students who are getting into 5^th and 6^th grade. The exam consists of verbal, quants, math, and reading comprehension which tests the student’s ability in critical thinking, problem-solving, and english basic knowledge. Based on their performance, students will get their stanine score which is converted from the percentile score. Then the performance is evaluated by the school they have applied and admission will be done.

ISEE Exam Structure

1. Verbal Reasoning: It mainly focuses on synonyms and sentence completion. Each section will be of 17 questions.

2. Quantitative Reasoning: Tests the critical thinking and problem-solving skills of the student.

3. Reading Comprehension: It focuses on English knowledge and reading skills. It has 5 passages and each passage has 5 questions.

4. Mathematics Achievement: Topics asked in math are given below.

• Algebra: Equations
• Probability: Outcome
• Data Analysis: Sets, Tables, Venn diagrams
• Geometry: Coordinate geometry, Plane geometry, Quadrilateral – Parallelogram, Rectangle, Squares, Trapezoid, Triangles
• Others: Distributive property, Fractions, Operations, Ratio and Proportion.

The essay writing will be unscored. A copy of the essay will be sent out to schools for evaluation. Thus, essay evaluates student’s deep knowledge on the topic, current affairs, facts, and the way of approach the topics.

Note: Calculators are not allowed.

Scoring In ISEE

Given below is the scoring in ISEE:

• Raw Score: This is the actual score secured by the student. Each section has some unscored questions also known as the experimental question which is not reviled. So, the difference in the total number of questions and experimental questions will be the actual raw score for that section. The same theory will be applied for all sections and the sum of all the correct answers will be the final raw score.
• Scaled Score: The raw score will be converted to the scaled score. The scaled score will be varying between 760-940. ESB conducts multiple versions of the exam every year and to normalize all the scores irrespective of exam forms, the scaled score will be helpful. The total number of correctly answered questions will be given a specific scaled number which will help to determine the percentile.
• Percentile: The scale score will be on the base of 100. It also relatively tests the student’s performance.
• Stanine: The following table gives the relation between percentile and stanine. The stanine score will be given for each section and will be on a scale from 1 to 9.
