Introduction To Railway Exam NTPC
The following article provides an outline for Railway Exam NTPC. RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) is the department under the Government of India that recruits employees (Group C and Group D non gazetted civil service) to work in Indian Railway. Every year close to 50 Lakh -1 crore candidates apply for RRB exams to work in one of the world’s largest railway systems and be part of it. But the hard part is that there are only a few vacancies present to fill up the seats.
Different types of exams conducted by RRB are:
- ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) and Technician
- RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories)
- RRB SSC|JE (Junior Engineer)
- RRB Group D Exam
Key Takeaways
- NTPC is an exam conducted by RRB for non-technical posts and is held usually once in 2 years. It is a long exam process that will take 6 months to 1 year to complete the whole process. Thus, relying only on the RRB exam might be risky.
- Exam pattern on a brief will be on CBT and skill test. Topics will be on mathematics, general awareness, and general aptitude.
- There are around 13 posts in NTPC and the questions in the exam pattern will vary for some type of post. Each post will have either a skill test or aptitude test for qualifying after the 2nd stage CBT and based on the final merit list candidates will be selected for their respective post.
RRB NTPC
RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) recruits for non-technical staff, paramedical staff and ministerial posts. There will be close to 35000 vacancies according to latest notice. For more information, kindly visit the official website.

NTPC Exam Analysis
RRB will not recruit people every year like UPSC or SSC exams. It is usually conducted 2 years once and based on the requirement. Since close to crore candidates appear for the exam, it’s difficult to conduct the exam in 1 day. Thus, RRB does the exam in stages. Usually, it will be 6 stages in which approximately 20 lakh people will write the exam in each stage.
The exam pattern followed by NTPC is:
- CBT Stage – 1
- CBT Stage – 2
- Skill/Aptitude Test
- Document Verification
1. CBT Stage 1
The nature of the exam is multiple choice questions for screening the candidates. It consists of 100 questions of each 1 mark for 90 minutes. Each wrong answer will be penalized with 0.33 marks.
The exam pattern consists of 3 major categories:
- Mathematics (30 qns)
- General Intelligence and Reasoning (30 qns)
- General Awareness (40 qns)
Candidates will be shortlisted on the merit list equal to usually 20 times the community-wise vacancy. The shortlisted candidates will be eligible for stage-2 CBT.
2. CBT Stage 2
It will be similar to the CBT stage 1 exam but will be slightly difficult than the earlier and will be different for different posts. The number of candidates appearing here will be way less than the CBT stage 1 and clearing this will allow candidates to appear for the skill/aptitude test. The only difference in pattern is it has 120 questions.
- Mathematics (35 qns)
- General Intelligence and Reasoning (35 qns)
- General Awareness (50 qns)
3. Aptitude/Skill Test
This will be qualifying in nature. An aptitude test will be held for the post of traffic assistant and station master. The final merit list will be based on 70 % of CBT stage 2 and 30% aptitude tests.
In the skill test round (for other posts), candidates need to get minimum qualifying marks. Usually, for skill tests, 8 times the number of vacancies will be called for typing skill test. Typing test measures the typing speed of candidates which should be 30 words per minute (WPM) for English and 25 WPM for Hindi.
4. Document Verification
Once the final merit list is released, the candidates need to verify their documents like caste certificates, degree certificates, etc. Once it is done, candidates will be followed with a medical test and they will be on board for Indian Railways. Candidates shortlisted will be equal to the number of posts available.
